A little welcome back! As summer winds down and we’re starting to think about getting back into the swing of things, here’s a reminder that Shoes for Crews will be on site to help you find your style and size in non-slip footwear.

For those returning to work over the next few weeks, this is a great opportunity to get your footwear sorted before things get busy again.

Financial Report

Current balances: Unit 1 – $63,381 | Unit 2 – $41,183. Accounts are in good standing. Gift cards were distributed to all union staff at Christmas. The Executive hopes to continue this practice in future years.

Social Events

The Family Christmas Party in December was the highest-attended ever, featuring games, crafts, face painting, pictures with Santa, gift bags for children, skating, and a meal at Gryphs restaurant.

The next social event is a Gryphon Men’s Hockey Game — February 12, 2026 at 7:30 PM. Staff can enjoy a pre-game meal and complimentary beverages at Craft Kitchen, swag, and door prize draws. Free admission for you and one guest. Register at: uoguelph.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0PMfWqSMzS1gU8S

President’s Awards

Nominations are open for the 2026 President’s Awards for Exemplary Staff Service. Nominate a deserving co-worker for this $1,000 award at: uoguelph.ca/president/awards

Incentive to Join the FSEA Executive

Executive committee members who contribute beyond the expected 5-hour monthly commitment can be paid up to 4 additional hours per month (with proof of work or course certificate). This is designed to support and encourage member participation on the Executive.

AI and Grievance Software

Mike and Evonne will be testing new AI-assisted grievance software developed by a U of G professor. FSEA negotiated a no-cost one-year trial (estimated $250/month if continued). This could be a valuable resource for members.

January 15 Snow Day

University management acknowledged the mistake in not calling the snow day before the work day began. All staff entitled to extra pay will be compensated.

Emergency closure policy reminder (University Policy 512):

• Unit 1 non-essential staff: Stay home with pay for scheduled hours
• Unit 1 essential staff: Regular pay plus additional straight-time pay or equivalent time off
• Unit 2 essential staff required to work: Straight-time pay in addition to regular pay
• Unit 2 non-essential staff: Do not report; no additional closure pay

Dear Members,

We’re pleased to share that the FSEA Walmart gift cards have started going out today. The Association felt it was important that this money go back into the pockets of our members, where it belongs.

We recognize that it’s been a challenging financial climate for many, and as we head into the holiday season, we hope this gesture helps ease some of that strain and bring a bit of extra comfort leading up to Christmas.

A reminder for Unit 1 members: you have until the end of November to allocate your flex spending credits. Please look for the email from HR sent on November 1st and follow the link provided to complete your allocation.

We also hope to see you all at the FSEA / Hospitality Services Festive Carnival on December 14th — it’s a great chance to connect, celebrate, and enjoy some well-earned time together.
